Think of bottling a miniature star right here on Earth — fusion smashes hydrogen atoms together at 150 million degrees, hotter than the Sun’s core, releasing enormous energy from the same process that lights every star in the universe. The challenge is containing this plasma inferno long enough to harvest its power.

Why does this matter? NIF achieved fusion ignition on December 5, 2022 — producing more energy than the laser input for the first time. ITER in France, the $22B international project, aims for 500MW output by the 2030s.
